Apple's
most iconic and
lovable desktop Mac has just gotten an upgrade. First introduced over
10 years ago, the iMac has long embodied the spirit of the original
Macintosh.
Of course, there have been a few changes since then!
The new iMac sports your choice of 21.5 or 27 inch displays (The first
iMac display was just 15 inches). LED backlighting ensures a smooth,
even illumination. The display features 1920 by 1080 resolution — well
beyond HD. The display technology, called in-plane switching (IPS)
gives bright color from a wide viewing angle.
The iMac's
electronics are housed in a seamless, precision-formed aluminum
enclosure. Except for the screen, all surfaces of the iMac are
gleaming, continuous aluminum, for a look and feel of dazzling quality.
The
iMac ships with a wireless keyboard and your choice of either a Magic
Mouse or a Magic Trackpad. The glass-surfaced trackpad allows you to
scroll pinch, swipe and rotate. The mouse also allows for gestures, and
some users may find it gives better precision. It's hard to decide
which you'll like best until you try them — maybe you'll want to get
both!
There are some features of the iMac that are more
style
than substance, but they do help differentiate the current model from
earlier models. On the front, the glass face goes all the way to the
edges (except for the bottom edge, of course — the iMac front still has
the "chin" or "Post-it Note area" as some users call it, but which I
think gives a display a look of balance). Also, the front edge of the
pedestal is slightly beveled. As with other models of the iMac line,
the speakers are integrated into the bottom edge of the display to
"bounce" sound off of your desktop.
As far as power, the new
iMacs sport the next generation of quad-core Intel processors which
Apple claims is up to 70% faster than the previous generation. Every
model comes with the Intel core i5 quad-core processor (an i7 processor
is available as an option on the 21.5 or 27 inch models.) Memory can be
upgraded to 16 GB, and if money is no object, you can equip your iMac
with a 256 GB solid-state drive.
All-new AMD Radeon HD graphics
processors across the line will provide more frames-per-second in 3-D
games and greater speed in editing HD home videos.
The 27-inch
iMac sports two Thunderbolt ports with 10 Gbps data channels, which
Apple says is up to 20 times faster than USB 2.0.
The new
FaceTime HD camera offers 720 P. resolution for ultra-crisp FaceTime
video calls to a similarly-equipped iMac or Macbook Pro. Of course, you
can also make video calls to other Intel-based Macs as well as the iPad
2, iPhone 4 and the newest iPod touch.
Besides the Thunderbolt
port that lets you daisy chain up to six devices and an additional
display, four USB 2.0 ports and one FireWire 800 port lets you connect
your iPod, iPod digital camera, mobile phone and external hard drive.
802.11n wireless technology allows you to connect to a Wi-Fi
network. Bluetooth wireless technology supports all of your
wireless accessories. The built-in SDXC card slot with support for 2TB
SD and SDHC cards.
Bottom line: This is a great Mac for website creation, blogging,
internet marketing and all-around use.
