The
venerable Nisus Writer is a powerful word processor that combines
several functions that you will wish were a part of all software, along
with others that only power users would lust after. But if you need
some of the features Nisus Writer offers, the program can be a
lifesaver.

First
introduced in 1989, Nisus Writer is one of the pioneers of Mac software
and was the first word processor for Macintosh which was able to handle
multiple type systems within one document, e.g. Arabic, Hebrew,
Japanese, etc., to give unlimited undos, noncontiguous selection, and
multiple editable Clipboards (up to ten).
An example of how
noncontiguous selection can come in handy is when you want to apply
boldface to several chapter headings. With non-contiguous selection,
you select all the chapter headings—and only the chapter headings—and
apply the boldface to them with a single keystroke. Multiple clipboards
comes in handy if you have to repeatedly insert multiple bits of
boilerplate text into your document, for example. With Paste Special
you can paste the text only, character attributes, or paragraph
attributes of the contents of your current clipboard.
Here’s a
feature I wish were in every text-handling program. When you move the
cursor over words set in italics, the cursor automatically bends over
to match the angle of the letters. This makes it much easier to place
the cursor between two letters for editing. No more guesswork!
The
thesaurus in Nisus Writer Pro is almost like a mini-dictionary. A short
definition of every set of synonyms is given, as well as parts of
speech, related words, contrasted words and antonyms. Nisus
Writer includes style sheets, indexing, glossary, drag and drop, and
mail merge.
The
program also boasts one of the most powerful find-and-replace
capabilities of any Mac word processor, offering three levels of
complexity. In its simplest form, the Find/Replace feature functions
like a standard Find command. But the PowerFind and PowerFind Pro
levels rival the searching capability of the Unix grep utility (Global
Regular Expression Parser), a text-programming language. Both PowerFind
and Power Find Pro let you use a wide range of wild cards and commands
to create complex search expressions for text and graphics, including
information in documents you don’t have open. This kind of searching
power comes in handy when your word processing borders on data
processing.
Admittedly,
this is more power than most people will ever need, but these rather
complex search tools are hidden until the user calls on them,
minimizing the potential for confusion. Nisus Writer also has a
convenient command to strip out the annoying characters that mess up
downloaded text files.
Illustrations are
extremely useful for many documents; Nisus Writer supports both
floating and inline images.
If
you don’t already have a separate, stand-alone macro utility (and maybe
even if you do!), you can record repetitive functions or create macros
using the program’s extensive built-in macro language. Nisus Writer
also supports Applescript.
Nisus Writer, like other high-end
word-processors, has its own built-in graphics module. You can draw
your own full-color diagrams and illustrations directly within the
program, using a variety of familiar tools such as the oval, rectangle,
line and fill tools. The program also features text wrap around
graphics, grouping, rotation, and transparency commands. You can also
import graphics in such formats as EPS and TIFF. Nisus Writer can also
insert graphics behind text to create a watermark and can even use
another Nisus Writer page as a graphic. You can also, of course, embed
QuickTime movies and sounds directly within Nisus Writer documents.
For
compatibility with other applications, Nisus Writer includes file
conversion filters for Microsoft Word and RTF, as well as for popular
graphic formats. And, of course, you can always output any Nisus Writer
document as a PDF document.
Nisus Writer includes tools that
help you create and edit tables in any format. The full featured math
editor lets you write properly formatted scientific and mathematical
equations. An equation editor includes Design Science’s Equation Editor
to easily create and edit scientific and mathematical equations with
automatic formatting. Table of contents and indexing features can
generate full Indexes from your document. Mail Merge is a useful
feature for offline marketing to merge with your Address Book or text
files.
Nisus
Writer boasts a powerful table of contents feature. A
thorough table of contents always makes a valuable and
appreciated
addition to an ebook.
If you like
floating tool bars, Nisus Writer has them. Click on a button to enact a
command rather than selecting it from a menu..
If you do not need all the powerful features, you can get Nisus Writer
Express, a lighter version of Nisus Writer Pro.
In
short, Nisus Writer is a powerful, specialized tool that will satisfy
the needs of many people. If you are one of them, give Nisus Writer a
try. You just may wonder how you got along without it.
