It
is said there are two types of computer users in the world: those who
have lost valuable computer data and those who are going to. If you are
concerned about data loss, then, backing up is the most important thing
you can do.
Web marketers who rely on their Macs for their
income, or at least a portion thereof, particularly need a reliable
backup program and strategy.
Unfortunately, backup programs
have traditionally been complicated and hard to use. Not anymore.
Intego Software offers Personal Backup, which may just be the
easiest-to-use Mac backup program ever made.
The idea is to be
able to back up your data automatically without any interference in
your work. You can either back up at command or at a specific moment
during the day, for example, each day at noon. You can also run backup
scripts which save your files from the source location to the backup
destination.

It
also backs up to all types of volumes, such as hard drives
(HFS/HFS+/UFS), AppleShare servers, Windows shares (samba), NFS
servers, iDisks, iPods, and more. Help is accessible in Personal Backup
in the user manual and in the Help menu.
If you want to use
any backup program these days, however, you will need some kind of
high-capacity external drive. Since external hard drives are relatively
inexpensive, it is best to purchase one and back up to that. Rather
than being a slave to your computer and feeding in DVDs, you can simply
start the backup to your high-capacity external drive and grab a bite
to eat. When you come back, your backup will be done.
Personal
Backup will also make incremental backups of your data. During the
first backup, it will back up all your data onto the folder or volume
of your choice. Afterwards, Personal Backup will only back up new files
and files which have been modified since the last backup.
Restoring
a file is also easy. All data is copied in Finder format: Whenever you
need to recover data, you just have to open the backup folder or volume
and you will find an exact copy of your data. There is no need to
restore data from a backup file.
Finder format backup may take
up a little more space on your backup drive than a compressed,
proprietary backup file, but restoring from it is as easy as using your
Mac. You simply insert the external storage medium, find the folder
that contains the file you want to restore, and drag it onto your hard
drive.
I have had need to restore a file using Personal Backup.
After running an updater on my antivirus software, I found that the
virus definitions were deleted. Restoring the file, however, was as
easy as dragging it from my backup disk into the appropriate folder on
my hard drive.
Personal
Backup also includes a fully functional synchronization option that
allows you to update the most recent items between two volumes. This is
most useful for laptop users, who may have the same files on both their
desktop computers and their MacBooks.
On the road, however,
they may make modifications to some of the files on their laptop, which
will mean that the files will no longer be identical to the files on
their desktop Mac. Rather than trying to keep up with which files are
the most recent on the two computers, users can run the synchronization
feature of Personal Backup, which will automatically copy the newer
files onto each machine. The feature is also handy for managing
multiple projects on removable media.
Personal Backup also runs
multigenerational backups, handles multiple backup scripts, creates an
exceptions list for any script, automatically connects to shared
volumes when the backup starts, lists all backup activities in a log
file and more.
